I am new to HT. I recently got a Integra 7.2 receiver and a Sony NC650V DVD and am in the process of setting them up. After a lot of reading and trial and error, I have pretty much figured out how to connect everything (much more complicated than my 2 channel tube stereo). I have one question, I see that some cable movies and TV shows say they are broadcast in 5.1 surround sound. I am trying to figure how to get the cable audio surround into the receiver. My TV (relatively new JVC (ie it has component "in")) does not have a audio digital "out" (only R & L). If I split the cable coax, can I run one of the cable coax directly into a digital audio coax "in" on the receiver to get the cable 5.1 audio? If not, is there anything else I can do?Thanks
Bill

I have the same question...I have a digital cable box and it does have audio out as well as digital audio out. I'm thinking to use digital cable from cable box to receiver so I can get 5.1 sound from cable box. I have another question...how do you record cable with vcr tape? Do I hook rf cable from cable box to vcr and another rf cable from vcr to tv or do I just hook video cable and audio cable from cable box to vcr even though i already have digital audio cable from cable box to receiver and s-video from cable box to receiver?
... you can only do it if you have a "digital out" for audio. The 5.1 signal is digitally encoded. If you only have analog out then I guess you will only hear stereo with pro logic. Our "free to air" broadcasts are still analog so Dolby Pro Logic is all that is carried. However it is due to change to digital soon. Here we already receive digital video via satellite but, like you, have no digital audio out so cannot get better than pro logic. However I hasten to add that Pro Logic II is very good and I am starting to feel that DD 5.1 is over hyped and that, done well, pro logic is just as good. The discrete rear channels have not, as yet, added very much to the surround enjoyment here although I concede the discrete centre & subs do.
Are you finding pro logic unsatisfying?

Based on my experience, it won't work that way. First, you need digital cable converter which decodes the cable TV signal to 5.1 digital signal. My digal cable converter box does not have digital out (sucks!) and have no way to enjoy 5.1 channel sound from digital cable TV. I have sold my AV receiver anyway, so I now don't care. But then again, you MAY be able to connect the cable tv coax to av receiver. Why don't you try? I won't be held responsible, though. Good luck! Ken
