I'm in the market for a new DVD player and it seems that the multi channel audio choices are DVD-A or SACD not both on any player worth buying. What should I go with DVD-a or SACD? Will both of these formats be around for the long run or will one will one be phased out? The Panasonic RP-91 looks real nice to me & I'm leaning toward it heavilly. The only hold-up is the multi-channel audio format. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Brian
Follow Ups:
Pioneer has released in Japan a unit that is dvd, dvd-a and sacd (the 747). I bought one in Singapore that was modified to take all region discs and it is the 732 (I think that's the number). Anyway, it provides multichannel, bass management, etc. along with progressive output -- all for about $625 US. Tough to beat. And the sound and picture are first rate. You might want to check into if anyone is importing the 747 model.
The model in question is Pioneer DV-S747A (European) or DV-S733A (Asian/Australian). I think the US model will be announced at CES.For more info, see:

It is not at all clear how much, if any, sonic advantage the actual DVD-A format track on a DVD-A disc has over the DD5.1 ot DTS tracks that are also on the same disc. In any case, the "back-up" tracks I've listen too so far are quite good. Consequently, a DVD player with multi channel SACD puts you in the position of being able to play virtually and kind of disc available.
SACD has more titles currently, with more apparently on the way with some big labels on board. Both formats have players cheap enough now so that you could almost get one of each. You might want to check out a list of current and upcoming titles in each format. The hi-rez digital board at this site is an excellent source of info and opinions also. I have SACD myself (Sony SCD-777ES--two channel only).Todd
