Curious on any members' thoughts on the Philips Q50 DVD Player. Interested in it's Progressive Scan DVD Video performance and how it performs with Redbook audio CDs.Thanks.
Follow Ups:
I use to have the Sony 9000ES. My initial thoughts:* Q50 has better low end resolution for CD playback. Much more noticable bass than my 9000ES.
* Q50 picture quality is very sharp, seems like the 9000ES picture was a tad on the soft side. Depending on your personal preference, I thought the 9000ES was more "film like". I need to tweak the video settings on the Q50 to see what happens. Out of the box, the Q50 picture colors seem a bit too "brilliant" for my tastes as well. Once again...video settings may ovecome this for my tastes.
* When watching 2.35 aspect ratio film, the black bars on my Loewe Aconda are not square with the picture tube. The 9000ES was dead square, so something with my picture alignment is off. The Q50 will allow you to adjust the horizonal placement (left and right adjustments) but not vertical. I'm wondering if my unit is not calibrated correctly. Any thoughts?
Yes, several people are reporting that the player freezes randomly on various (random) discs even with the latest firmware update.See: www.avsforum.com for more details in the DVD hardware section

I have 157 hours on my Q50 with no problems what-so-ever. Great audio playback, I now enjoy SVCD's and all of the plastic records I have convereted to CD-A play with exceptional faithful reproduction
P-scan video performance is best in class+++, natural and satuated color, very film like. Beating machines cost 3 times more. Audio performance is above class...towards the musical side though a bit plain. Comfortable listening. Prefer it over Sony 9000ES in CD mode. The Q50 drive you more to listen to music instead on the 9000 towards evaluating wiht HiFi terms.JCW
I ordered one, but the supplier was very slow delivering and when it finally turned up they would not permit an audition so I cancelled.I notice there is some contraversy over various "bugs" in the player (do a search on AVA) and not exactly the same Q50 appears in every country. But it is getting a pretty positive response on video. I have seen no comments on its CD capabilities but Philips products are usually above average in the audio department.
Bottom line, it does appear to be one of the best value DVD players around. Give us a review if you end up auditioning and/or buying one.
