Hi,I am looking to get a new high end 27" TV, and so far I have looked at the Sony Wega, the Panasonic Tau, and the RCA TruFlat.
On the models sitting on the store's shelf, most pictures looked very sharp, with accurate colours, however on the Sony, any straight horizontal lines displayed on the bottom third of the screen looked wavy, as they approached the right side of the screen. I was surprised to see such obvious geometric distortion on a TV at this price leve, it would certainly be noticible when watching a leterboxed movie., or CNN for that matter.
On the Panasonic, the whole picture was crooked, maybe 1/2" off accross the whole screen. I did not notice either of these defects on the RCA, however the salesman quicky pointed out the RCAs have a history of not being reliable (I am not sure how he came to that conclusion with this specific model though, it hasn't been around very long) was this a tactic to sell me a (slightly) more expensive model, or is it true? Does anyone out there own a TruFlat RCA?
If anyone out there knows of a quality 27" TV, I would really like to know what my best bet is... so far the RCA is my first choice, based on what I saw in the store, however if it really is not a reliable TV I may as well just go for the plain 27" trinitron and get an LCD video projector in a few years... (CRT video projectors are nice, but living in an apartment I can't really screw it to the ceiling and set it up properly)
Thanks for any help,
Max

Hi,I've been living with my Panny Tau 27 for almost a year now and I couldn't be happier. Well as far as 27 inchers go. I notice geometry distortions on really bright scenes and the distortion isn't as bad as what I have seen on the sony sets. I have no actual measurements, just by eye. I need to have it serviced to correct some over scan. It isn't much but its there, my 5 year old panaflat 27" in my bedroom which at the time actually cost way more than my TAU doesnt have that problem. I like the color balance on the Tau compared to the rest. It just seemed more natural. Also to my eyes the scan lines are more apparent on the sony and toshiba sets than on the Tau sets. I wasn't too impressed with the RCA sets. The proscan sets look very nice, no flat screens last I checked but nice pictures none the less. I wish thier cabinets looked a bit better.
Good luck,

Max,
I had a panasonic GAOO, the old Superflat (but not really flat) TV. It exhibited the same crooked picture you discribed but to a lesser degree, maybe 1/8" at the extreme. I returned it and got another one that has been perfect since (five years running). Yes the WEGA's all have horrible geometry especially the 24", but people don't seem to care, they just want that flat WEGA screen. Most flat screen TV's, with the exception of plasmas, have extra glass in the corners (to achive a ruler flat plane) this is what causes the distortion. It's a classic give and take. I don't know much about RCA reliability as of late but 5-6 years ago they were, in my experience, the worst in the industry. I know I've probably steered you clear of all three, so I'm sorry. My advice would be to look at some additional Pana's to see if they exhibit the same problem. I've been happy with mine so on the one hand I'm biased but on the other, I've got to give good products some word of mouth advertising. Hope this helps some. -Tim
