You don't have to pay for anything you don't want. Does it make a difference? Hmmmmm....yes, if you have a good TV display that can use progressive scan video. Can you see the difference? On a big screen (40-inch or larger diagonal) - yes. DVD players with 3:2 detection are cheap - it's the displays that are expensive. If you watch a lot of movies you can see the difference. The picture display looks visibly "smoother." If you can't see it, don't pay for it - it's as simple as that.
you can be sure that if it requires more cables you need it.the absolute limit of "entertainment technology in a box" was reached sometime in the mid 1950's. since then, the only advances in audio and video have been in marketing and cables.
go ahead, ask your local HT merchant how many cables you need to hook it up...
ask him,
i double dare you...
i give you three to two odds that the cables "necessary" to complete the circuits cost more than all the other hardware combined.
go ahead, ask him.
he doesn't know..does he.
nobody knows what those wires are for, they just know you need a whole lot of them, and don't forget the adapters, because god forbid that the company that makes the DVD player should put the same connectors on their television...the horror!
the short answer: after a glass or two, nobody can tell the difference
