Because that's the way Krell decided to reward the original purchasers that still have their processors?
Of course, the way around it, if you bought it used from an individual is to have the original purchaser send it back and save a cool US$1000.

For sticking around with all the buggy software and other problems of the earlier Krell processors I would want a bigger carrot than $1000
