I decided to go out and finally buy a DVD player after work today. Since I don't have a home theatre receiver yet, is it possible to hook it up to my old stereo receiver (left and right channels)? Is any special jack or adjustments to the DVD player or receiver needed? Thanks in advance!
Follow Ups:
The menu on my Technics A-10 has a screen for speakers and turns on or off each channel and whether the mains are big or little. Also it has an additional feature in a different menu that lets me emphasize the center channel material via the two main channels. (so spoken dialog is not drowned out by effects, really useful late at night when I want to watch a movie quietly) It has the 6 separate outs but also two sets of 2-channel outs that work at all times, so I can plug in the the TV audio direct and have two channels to the stereo.
One comment about any DVD player: if you thought the clock on a VCR was a hard thing, DVD menus are way WAY more confusing!!! read the manual at LEAST a couple of times to know all the features and options
Elizabeth,Your Panasonic has DD/DTS built-in, not all DVD players come that way.
Many only come with a digital output (coax or optical or both) and a L&R analog output.
But you are still correct in that many players will still let you hook up and use both outputs (some may require DVD player menu changes to use either output and some don't).

You may need to select an audio output option in the DVD player setup menus to enable the analog L&R audio output from the DVD player to your stereo receiver. But every DVD player should have this audio output option.

It should work fine as long as you make the proper audio playback selections on each DVD you play, i.e., Dolby 2.0 for movies.
You never need to select any kind of mode for the specific DVD movie you are watching. All DD material is automatically downconverted to stereo thru the analog outs of the DVD player, even when the DD5.1 output option is selected on the specific DVD movie's menu.bstan
Also, by playing certain music dvd's through the rca outs, you will benefit from the higher audio resolution that many dvd's offer. You might have to go into the dvd setup menu and tell the player to not down covert the higher resolution signals for dolby digital and dts. This will keep the pcm audio at the higher 48khz/16bit or the 96khz/24 bit sampling rates which in my opinion, put any cd player(high end or otherwise) to shame. I say enjoy, because dvd audio is special through the analoge outs. You WILL be impressed!!!
