Is it worth forking out $850 right now on a TV? The salesman was saying that most TV's have a 3 line digital comb filter which makes them HDTV compatible. Is this true?
HDTV could mean a multitude of things. Ranging from needing a set top box
that downconverts to standard TV resolution. A progressive scan TV than can handle some HDTV and DTV modes natively and downconverts others. Or a fully compatibe HDTV that just needs a converter. At $850 I would say that it is most likely the first. As the others typically cost $2000 and $8000 respectively. As for the comb filter is has little to do with it
No. Just because a tv has 3 line digital comb filter, its not hdtv ready. Sony makes a 32 in. WEGA that has a 3 line digital comb filter and is not HDTV ready. Since I'm new to this, I would suggest going to a manufacturers home page and look for yourself what the model is capable of.
BTW, what are you buying it for? Meaning, do you watch mostly cable, DSS, or DVD?
Actually I bought the Sony27" Wega. I got a deal on it from Circuit City since I found it on sale for $749 at abt. Circuit City reimbursed me $120 so I only paid $730. Not too bad. When HDTV's come down in price I'l have had my monies worth out of the Sony. I',ll be watching DSS and DVD's on it.
