To continue our thread from below..... first of all, I don't know how I managed to forget War of the Worlds in my list of best sci-fi films of the 50's but I would tie it for first place with Forbidden Planet. Thank you for pointing it out. Here's my revised list of top 10 sci-fi films of the 50's:1. Forbidden Planet/War of the Worlds (tie)
2. Day the Earth Stood Still
3. Them!
4. I Married a Monster from Outer Space
5. Destination Moon
6. It Came from Outer Space
7. When Worlds Collide
8. Invasion of the Body Snatchers
9. The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T
10. Invaders from Mars*** Dog of the Decade: Angry Red Planet (who can forget the amazing rat-bat-spider-crab monster?)
Despite the horrible title, I Married a Monster is actually pretty good sci-fi and a personal fave, but I wouldn't argue with you that the decade produced more important sci-fi films. Now on to the good stuff: sci-fi from the 60's. Here's my top 10 picks:
1. The Time Machine
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Clockwork Orange
4. First Men in the Moon
5. The Power
6. Doppelganger: Journey to the Far Side of the Sun
7. Fantastic Voyage
8. The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao
9. L'Ultimo uomo della Terra (The Last Man on Earth)
10. Robinson Crusoe on Mars*** Dog of the Decade: Mars Needs Women (yeech!)
Despite the importance of Kubrick's 2001, I have more personal affection for the Time Machine and rank it among my top 10 favorite films of all time. I really love the films from the 60's, not just sci-fi but all films, American and foreign, and they seem to hold up better than many of the sci-fi films of the 70's.
Post your top 10 films if you like, after reading your IMDB reviews I'd be interested in knowing your picks.
