The current issue of the Toronto-based magazine Cinemascope has published a poll of the best films of the '90's as nominated by alternative film programmers and critics from around the world. The top 106 vote-getters are fairly eclectic: e.g., the runaway winner was Lars von Trier's "Breaking The Waves", followed by Scorsese's "GoodFellas" and Kar-Wai's "Chungking Express." Also, the Best Director went to Iran's Abbas Kiarostami ("Taste Of Cherry", "Close-Up"). But there are some surprises, such as "Starship Troopers" (!?!) tied for 84th place, and "Groundhog Day" (one of my guilty pleasures) tied for 38th place.
