A southerner who had colored liberated servants in thev 18th century? He would've been hanged! I thought this was pure PC stuff that Hollywood made to invent a character to make his brutality indearing rather than repulse a modern day audience.
I guess the telling of the "secret" was as close to expose his notorious history in a more tolerable way.
