Catch-22 is claustrophobic, but it's about a plane, not a tank.
How about this one - White Sun of The Desert? All those wide-plain desert war films are strangely claustrophobic to me. The scene in the oil tank(!) is a masterpiece.
The one you mentioned is probably the Zhavoronok film from the sixties.
The worst would be Three Tank Crew and a Dog(loved it when I was a kid).Good call on the Sahara, Scott!
