Rented this DVD because a German friend (she's big on Jean Reno) said the long European version (by 40+ minutes) was a lot better than the American release (distributed by Weintraub Studios when they were about to go under). I didn't know quite what to make of the American version when I saw it in the theaters (I said, "what the hell was that about?" My date said, "hmmm, mysterious, magical"). But the Director's Cut reveals a full load of crap, clumsy cuteness, and pomposity. What do you get with the extra 40+ minutes? A different musical score that sounds like it came from a porno movie (lots of sax and bass guitar), more of Jacques Mayaul playing with dolphins, more of the annoying Roseanna Arquette, "aardvarking" between Arquette and Marc-Barr, helium voice hijinks between Enzo and Jacques, failed dive attempts by the Japanese team, Jacques' crazy uncle in a bathtub, etc. In other words, the mystery and magic is gone--Luc Besson REALLY lacks artistic vision and this film SUCKS! I'm gonna see that cheerleader movie instead.
