I am not quite sure which players you have been looking at or
what DVD's.

The Cals are pretty good! I owned a CL-20 and moded the audio
section, which made it pretty competitive with the most expensive
cd sepereates out there if not better than most.

I got sick and tired of the reliability issues and after discussing
improvements in technology of IC chips, from a friend who did
the mods and keeps up on this stuff, I decided to buy a Marantz
DVD 18 THX model. Half the retail price and I got a sweet deal
on a Refurb. Did a few basic mods myself based on his suggestions.

Picture on it dusts the Cal, it is not even close. Sound was as
good stock as the Cal except it was a little closed in and rolled
off. Bass was better and the midrange more even. With about 50.00
in parts etc the thing clobbered my modded Cal which was a good
bit better sonically than the standard CAL. None of these mods
had any effect on the picture, but they weren't intended too.

So check out the latest top o the line Pioneers and Marantz DVD's
the Toshiba's are also pretty good.
