Movies from comedy to drama to your favorite Hollyweird Star.

"Almost Famous" is my favorite film so far this year. I thought it was a very personal, involving film, unlike the people-under-glass distant approach in "Boogie Nights." But like "Boogie Nights"' porno stars, the rock 'n' roll people in the film aren't exactly geniuses.
[Interesting that both it and my second favorite, "High Fidelity", feature vinyl records. I have a particular soft spot for the story of an adolescent thrown into a world of older "adults" in the '70's as my first paying job was as a record store clerk at age 16 while the other staff were early-20's or older. Gee, I thought I was so cool.]

"Meet The Parents" is funny, but it is the kind of humor that is at someone else's expense (Ben Stiller isn't exactly Jacques Tati). My acquaintances have split right down the middle on this film by gender--men liked it and women didn't. I was ready to stand up and cheer, however, when Stiller goes off on an airline flight attendant. I guess the women would have liked it better if Stiller got his zipper stuck around his scrotum again.
