Concerning "Crouching Tiger," it did win awards for some of HK film crew (e.g., cinematographer), but the Foreign Language Oscar went to Taiwan (Ang Li's homeland), and this has to irk the Chinese government to no end. As far as most Americans are concerned, the ethnicities of China, HK, and Taiwan are all "Chinese." The perception tends to be that Wong Kar Wai, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Zhang Yimou, and Ang Li (now U.S.) are all from the same place, while these directors came from different film cultures/traditions.
