This movie has just come out to hugely positive reviews. It warrants them. It is precisely constructed, obviously similar to Pulp Fiction. The actors do a great job, especially the older unkempt fellow. It offers a fascinating glimpse of rich and poor in modern Mexico City. And it addresses some of the Big Questions. But it is hard to take and I am not at all sure I am glad to have seen it. The first moment of screen time is a reassuring notice that no amimals were harmed during the making of this movie. Still, film is a powerful medium. There are images and situations regarding dogs which are very sad. They stay with you.
I know this is one of the points of the film. We see horrible things happen to people every day in movies and think nothing of it. But when they happen to dogs, it is upsetting. I guess it is a point to consider. But it is not light entertainment, I am not sure it is entertainment at all. If you are a dog lover, I would let this one pass.
