Bird is a weak film, imho. It portrays Parker as a whining "tormented genius", like many films portray musicians. I watched about half of it. Couldn't take it any longer. It's not even that it doesn't give any "insight"(?) into his death, like the other poster noted, it's just a weak film as films go, imho.
Round Midnight is also cheesy and derivative. I guess it's tough to produce films about musicians. Perhaps I'm too hard on these films, but I think i know jazz music and jazz history just enough to tell when people fake it.
Good films about musicians are documantaries - Straight No Chaser, Jazz on a Summer Day, Jazz Scene, Triumph of the Underdog, etc.
There's a new film out called The Tick Code, based on life of one rather noted contempoary jazz musician who suffers from Tourette's Syndrome. I haven't seen it, but it shouldn't be too bad.
