I usually notice cinematography and continuity errors. I didn't notice the lense flare.

As for the depth of field things you note. Today, most everything is digitally edited and even in the oddest circumstances digitally altered (it's not just the big special effects films that use digital effects).

It could well be a by-product of the lense, or, it could have been shot with large depth of field (everything back is in focus), but then they decided shallow depth would be better and digitally altered it that way. I don't know at all, but this is just speculation on what of the many things could be done to create odd effects like you saw.
