While perhaps best known as Rumpole of "Rumpole of the Bailey", Leo McKern was a well-known character actor in quite a few good movies. I'll never forget his hilarous role in "HELP!" He was a very fine actor and I'll miss him.And as Rumpole - well, he was Rumpole in the same way that Raymond Burr was Perry Mason and Bogie was Sam Spade. When I read a Rumpole story, it is McKern that I picture. He was the perfect actor for the part. His shoes are gonna be mighty hard to fill!
Why are most of the truly great character actors British?
