Takashi Miike's "The Happiness of the Katakuris"

Want to try something completely different? Takashi Miike's "The Happiness of the Katakuris" has arrived on region 1 DVD. Imagine "The Sound of Music" combined with "Dead Alive" with direction by Peter Jackson and you get a rough idea of the weirdness of this black comedy. It should appeal to the same cult audience as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Four generations of the Katakuri family toil away with endless optimism running a remote mountain resort where the rare customers all end up dead in their hotel room. The story is told in musical form with amateurishly charming song-and-dance numbers, a karaoke singalong, and occasional claymation. The "Making Of" documentary on the DVD shows that the cast had a blast making the film, especially 81 year-old veteran actor Tetsuro Tamba, and the entire film crew ends up performing in a song-and-dance number at the end.

A funny, tacky, happy film. Me like. Hulk like, too.
