Even after 72 years somethings stay the same. Serial killers hopelessly out of control. The general public nearing panic. Authorities ready to do anything to make the collar. Vigilantes emerging from the darker corners of society. How fresh and prophetic. When I popped this in early this evening I had no idea what to expect. Needless to say, this is one of the very first "talkie" masterpieces. Not from the standpoint of craft or talent but from the freshness of a seven decade old story that resonates here and now.
Ah, the insights to German culture. The police wanting more raids and spies among the people (it's 1931!), papers being checked everywhere, and the nationalistic personalities of the citizenry. (Had Herr Hitler already effected German culture so much?)
Truly, the more things changes . . . .
