Well, I'm gonna go ahead and stick my neck out and admit to liking Kevin Costner. I wouldn't hesitate to come forward as a fan of Bergman, Felini, Welles or Kurosawa; nor would I blanch at the admission that I admire Stan Brakhage ... But I also love Frank Capra, Max Fleicher (and his son Richard, who made 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA), the Marx Brothers, Francis Coppola, and I've seen BEN HUR a million times, THE EGYPTIAN is one of my favorite films. I love SPARTACUS, and I think the greatest western ever made was ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, and Sam Pekinpah bores me. Even more than John Ford! ... I could go on and on, but mainly I just want to put in a kind word for Kevin Costner, whom I feel is becoming a great film maker. Great in the way that Frank Capra and George Stevens were. These are his predecessors, I feel, more than Ford or Clint Eastwood. And, as an actor, he begins to take the place of Jimmy Stewart. Check out OPEN RANGE. Then start throwing your tomatos!
