Thanks to a wonderful on line virtual museum run by Smithsonian Air and Space Museum curator Alan Janus (search for "The Janus Museum"), I learned of the two DVD set of the movie serial, "The Phantom Empire" starring Gene Autry. It's a 12 part cliffhanger from 1934 and involves the singing cowboy, his ranch, a radio show, radium seeking villains, and Murania, an city 25,000 feet below the Earth's surface.
I remember catching this on local Boston TV early in the fifties. It has to be one of the most entertaining and unusual chapter plays ever conceived. The two DVDs are amazingly cheap from www.oldies.com.
