"The Towering Inferno"

This is probably the best of the many Irwin Allen disaster films of the seventies and is typical of the genre: multiple name casts, a child with some sort of affliction, love interests, punishment of the wicked, hero(es) save the day.

This one is based on two competing books, was made by two competing studios, and has two BIG stars, Steve McQeen and Paul Newman. Their contracts called for them to have equal screen time and the exact same number of spoken dialog words.

Also, I have posted befoire that this is the only film that features both Fred Astaire and O. J. Simpson. Astaire is supposed to be a con man but is just so likeable you can't believe it. Even sitting down he's graceful.

The DVD is a a big improvement over the laserdisc and features passable ersatz 5.1 sound. It is not anamorphic, however.
