The photography is really special: the shots of the town taken from the bluffs, with the church visible in the distance the destination of the driver. The ensuing shots, as he arrives, bring a sense of reality and immediacy I've seldom felt.
All in all, not a profound movie---long discussions of Pascal are not my cinematic cup of tea. However, the "triangle" is very interesting, with a level of sophistication never seen in domestic attempts at romance.
I didn't care much for the two females, either, but JL Trintignant was wonderful. He can do more with a silence than most actors with a 10-minute dialogue. His performance alone is worth an hour and a half of your time.
(This Eric Rohmer effort won Oscar for Best Foreign Film).
