This film by the director of "My Dog Skip" is a very real and human story of a a fireman and the preople around him, family, colleagues and his boss. Joaquim Phoenix plays the firemen and John Travolta is the fire house captain. It is told in flashbacks after our man is injured in a warehouse fire after saving a colleague. Allong the way he reports for duty as a "probie", gains experience, meets his girlfriend who becomes his wife, and has many adventures fighting fires and saving people. The is a far beeter film than "Backdraft" and I found myself moved by it. Just as "A Boy and his Dog" transcends the cliches you'd expect, so does "Ladder 49". Highly recommended.
