This is one of my favorite Coen brothers films and I watch it every New year's Eve. It stars Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, Charles Durning, and Jennifer Jason Leigh and tells the tall tale of the invention of the Hula Hoop in late 1958. Bumpkin Robbins is hired as CEO by Newman to cause stockholders owning shares of Hudsucker Corporation to lose confidence, panic, and sell their shares so Newman and his board can buy a controlling interest and keep the corporation from going public. There are many set peices of hilarity and great enjoyment and a ton of references to other films, particularly "Superman". Carter Burwell's Copelandesque score soars and 1950's New York City is deftly captured. Stev Buschemi has a small role as bartender. The outrageous battle at the end is a hoot.
Way recommended although it went nowhere box office wise.
