Jodie Foster plays a young woman raised in rural Appalachia by a religious fanatic mother and no access to men or modern conveniences. Although close to a feral child she does speak a strange language. General practioner Liam Neeson and a female shrink take three months out of their crowded schedules to observe her first hand in her natuaral habitat (how believable is that?). They come to understand her language and communicate but are forced to take her into the city when the media discovers the story. There is a courtroom scene that also is not believable. There is a contrived happy ending and along the way outsider Foster "cures" the local sheriff's wife of depression.
