USC film school

Here's a topic that might be of interest to all you film buffs and students of the cinema.

Last Monday, my family and I visited the School of Cinematography and Television at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. This school is arguably the best in the country in its field, and possibly in the world, with state-of-the-art facilities endowed by Stephen Spielberg and other luminaries of the movie world.

My 17-year-old son, who will be a senior in high school next year, wants to apply for admission there. We took a tour of the campus, including the film facilities, to see what it was like.

We learned that on the average there are 3000 applicants each year for the freshman class. Only 50 or so are accepted.

I told him not to get his hopes up.
