Le Papillon

This 2002 French film starring Michel Serrault s not breaking any new grounds. And old man gets hooked up - by chance - with a precocious little girl, and they develop a difficult relationship. And old man and a child... we all have seen it thousand times before.

And you are right, this one is based to large degree on cliche's, and yet it manages to maintain enough charm to get a soft recommendation.

Not as a serious movie, mind you, but as something for those times when you would like to watch something with your kids and are afraid to put on yet another Hollywood juggernaut, dripping with blood, "f@@ks", gore and drugs.

Of course it is corny. Of course it is heartwarming. With a few thought provoking moments.
