Well I can see what all the differences of opinion were about.I loved the special effects (tripods were awesome) and the "sound" of the aliens was about the best ever in sci-fi.
That said, I wish Cruise and company had just been left out of the film completely. I am somewhat of a Tom Cruise fan but this was positively his worst ever role. I also like Dakota Fanning and I wish she would have just passed on this one, since any child coul;d have taken her place and screamed their way through.
Between Cruise, his daughter, and his son, this has to be one of the most worhtless, uncaring, irritating bunch of charactors ever placed in any film.
And as others have said, the Tim Robbins charactor made no sense at all. He wants to kill aliens, Cruise kills him to prevent him from doing that- and then kills the aliens himself??!!!!
What was Speilberg thinking?
