I was kind of surprised actually. Keanu Reeves plays a modern day exorcist trying to buy his way into heaven after a suicide attempt as a teenager. Despite what you might imagine the film brought forth all kinds of interesting and unusual concepts (at least for me or maybe I don’t get out a lot) like:Trapping a demon in a mirror and then smashing it.
Visiting hell by drowning or somehow using water.
Demons and angels cannot actually exist on earth but can visit and tempt man.
A very interesting turn by Tilda Swinton as the angel Gabriel, an asexual creature who decides to aid the devil’s son in order to make man suffer and “rise†to God’s love. The CGI was rather well done, but most of all I was struck by the thought that went into the screenplay which I learned was based on some comic. The opening scene was a keeper and one of the better and more chilling exorcisms caught on film!
