Night and the City.

It has a lot going for it, noir-wise, but...here again, the lead character is such a louse, with no redeeming value, that it's hard to care much what happens to him. Yes, the acting, casting, editing, cinematography, and realism are first-rate...but its still a two-dimensional portrait of a character.
Dassin was brilliant in showing the humanity of Cristo for his dad, Gregorius, and the fat Greek club owner's pure love for his tawdry double-crossing moll...but the film ultimately fails by not making Widmark's character as human.
Worth seeing but NOT the classic it's made out to be. I don't know if Widmark had the depth to portray Fabian any better...
