...it's the way he tries to portray everyday life people/situations that just reek of pretentiousness/bathos & Hollywood and leave an embarrasingly saccharine after-taste.
The last scene of the guy making love to his wife, interspersed with shots of the massacre was downright corny/embarassing.
Technically, he can 'film', of course.
At least, in Duel, there were no kids/women for him to have slobber and to slobber about.
