What a great cast, in fact: Vince Vaughn, Tilda Swinton, Vince D'Onofrio, Keanu (darn good as a spacy orthodontist) and the kid who played the sucker.
Not a classic coming of age story but one that does a credible job of showing the difficulties faced by kids in our contemporary society. No easy answers, no swelling music, no theatrical scenes where people freak out for no discernible reason except that the actor wanted to chew scenery. It also steered clear of typical kid stereotypes, i.e. the brilliant nerd, the stupid jock, the beautiful bitch girl/woman, etc. The parents and teachers are also "real" and not one-dimensional machines.
Sex, drugs, educational and achievement pressures... all nicely treated by an exceptional cast in a well-written film.
Don't expect the Graduate quality and you'll have a good time.
