"Memories of Murder:" you want to see a great serial killer/thriller?

S. Korea again proves it is the film capital of the decade.
Years ago in a remote agricultural area a series of brutal killings of women occurs. Since Korea had no history of serial killings, there is no forensic model, no expertise upon which to call.
The lead detective approaches the crimes as he would his common cases, with predictable results: this killer is clever and ruthless.
The three detectives are very well played, especially the lead one, and the relationship with the police chief is refreshingly original. In fact, as I am beginning to expect in Korean films, there is not a cliché in sight.
It would be a mistake merely to say this is one of the finest films of its kind ever made; as a character study and a picture of small town life, it equally is superb.
From one of the first scenes, in which the rural detective "greets" his big city partner, you know you're in for a special time.
This is Silence of the Lambs w/out the ridiculous Hollywood exaggerations and "star" turns; it is more akin to the great Dutch film "The Vanishing," but why compare it? It is excellence able independently able to stand alone.
As the credits rolled, I felt an explosion of anger, almost rage.
It is amazing what great films can do. If you've been unmoved by film for awhile, try this one. You won't easily forget it.
