A big budget Merchant Ivory production about the blight of Russian ex-royalty in the 30s.
Its a long (135 mins) slow-ish moving almost epic, it certainly strives for that effect towards the end without being totally successful, partly because Ralph Ffiennes' lead is not a convincing character, in my opinion and drifts through the film without effort or motivation.
That apart its an enjoyable movie in many ways.
I didn't know Vannessa Redgrave still made movies but here, she and her sister make a good pairing showing the painful strata-ing of class.
