"Ichi the Killer" by Takashi Miike makes SC look like a film student assignment.
It features a battle of wits, fists, knives, and... ability to absorb punishment between the two most sadistic/masochistic film characters I've ever seen (or heard about).
Not for the squeamish, but if one has sat through SC that adjective doesn't apply, anyway.
Several things "Ichi" manages which evaded SC's director: complexity, character development, relentless pace, unobtrusive style, and an almost unnerving sense of foreboding.
