"Barabbas"

Although shot in murky Technirama with a surround sound track that doesn't seem to fit the picture, 1962's "Barabbas" tells a compelling story of the criminal the crowd freed instead of Jesus. Not only does Barabbas escape crucifixion but under Roman law he cannot be put to death for any other crime. When he is again caught stealing he is sentenced to the Sicilian sulpher mines, where he survices for 20 years and strikes up a friendship with a young Christian who helps convert him. Through a series of circumstances they end up as gladiators. Throughout, Barabbas is haunted by guilt over the fact that he was spared. Anthony Quinn puts in a fine performance here.
