"Andrei Rublev." Simply stated,

I'm astounded.
Seldom does a work of art transcend its medium. The vision, cinematography, score, and dialogue blend effortlessly into an experience of towering intensity.
The meaning of art, life, ascetism, mysticism--- all intelligently addressed.
Also, a disorientingly real visit to the medieval ages in Russia, with no attempt easily to paint hero or villain as such, awaits the viewer.
Were those times of Tatar invasions, feudal servitude, and Church-led brutality more barbarous than the Stalin era... or what now is happening in Iraq?
As a priest explains world-weariedly to Rublev, "we are doomed endlessly to repeat" (paraphrased).
