Eventually, the moral wasteland of her life hits hard and an emotional crisis leads to her being "born again."
Convinced by a "seer" that the "End" is near, and reeling from a devastating personal tragedy, she believes only the sacrifice of her child truly can lead to Salvation.
This is an overlooked gem which unflinchingly looks at redemption, ecstatic religion, and loss.
Much to its credit, it provides no easy answers and stays with the viewer for a long time.
Mimi shows she is an underrated actress: her performance should have garnered a Oscar nomination, at the very least.
She is a feast for the eyes, as well, in a ripe sort of way...
