For Halloween, I screened "Night Watch" by

Russian director Bekmembetov (or some such polysyllabic confusion...).
You want to see brilliant fx which actually advance the plot and make sense in their scenes? How about a fantastic plot with enough complexities to stand up to several viewings? Interesting characters not only caught up in these fantastic goings on (the Forces of Light vs., what else, the Forces of Dark) but dealing with issues which speak to modern society, as well?
Of course, you could just sit back and enjoy the ride, which is one hell of an entertaining, original one with enough inventiveness and "cool" factors for the planned two more in the series.
Yes, there are several minor quibbles--- such as a shape-shifting owl which is played by what must be the most unattractive young woman in Russian film (could have been Woody Allen in drag)--- and must be someone's relative because of the purposelessness of her character, but it hardly matters.
Get your goblin, er goblet, of Bloody Mary and sit down to this gem.
Oh, did I mention that the director avoids the boring, two-tone grey/black palette of Matrix and LOTR? A real bonus, that!
