What a great title: "Last Life in the Universe." An extraordinarily

fastidious young man--- who has serious shyness "issues"--- repeatedly attempts to commit suicide, with his brother interrupting one of the more serious attempts.
A very violent episode involving his brother drives him from his picture-perfect apartment to seek asylum with an extraordinarily sloppy young woman whom he has just met and who has jsut caused the death of her sister. Also, the young woman is in the process of breaking up with a gang boss who is extremely unhappy at being jilted.
Yes, a trite plot but, as with many Asian directors, Pen-ek Ratanaruang isn't really concerned with it: he tells the story visually, with camerawork, music, and sounds (the breaking waves' sounds at the girlfriend's apartment are almost a third character)--- mood and reflection are the key. This film has as much in common with mainstream filmmaking as Mark Rothko does with Manet.
Go ahead, take a chance on a very different experience.
