Ric Burns New York

I just finished my second viewing of the Ric Burns(Kens brother) documentary about New York's history. A great 13 hour study that ends with an additional disc Burns made after the 9/11 tragedy. This documentary is a must see for anyone interested in American history, politics and the building, design and construction of New York City.

The additional 9-11 disc was unforgettable and powerful. The history of the Towers was covered amazingly in depth. Extensive interviews with politicians and engineers who were intimately involved with the construction of the the Twin Towers was riveting & moving. There was a charming segment dedicated to a French born tightrope walker who illegally walked the towers and captured the imaginations of many New Yorkers.

Despite many high points , much of the last disc was hard to see and relive. The film maker Burns assembled never seen 9-11 footage comprised of personal home video and vantage points never seen publicly before. Although I learned volumes about NYC and the Twin Towers, I didn't learn a thing by seeing those aircraft's pile into the structure again.

Although I have mixed reviews about the Burns catalog, to me, this NYC documentary stands out as one of the Burns Bros. best. Right up there with the Baseball, Civil War and Jack Johnson films.
