The weekend couple

Not a great weekend, but still, no Titanic either.

I suspect some would enjoy "Insomnia". Not a great movie, but a good one, one you don't regret renting. OK, so the rent has gone up, and there is no more sweet 5 for $5 deal in town anywhere, but even at $2.75 it still beats the shit out of sharing the crowded room with teens, popcorn and Speilberg.

It is hard not to like Stellan Skarsgård, and here he is just well, himself. Gloomy and sleepless, he needs not do much at all, for he's got that power over you. A bit more indifference and he would start losing his charm, but this star of Breaking the Waves and Ronin knows where to stop. All in all, fine two hours.

When it comes to "Ko zaprem oci" (When I close my Eyes) I say yes. Take a look. This film from Slovenia is no "Profession - Reporter", but it has its share of interesting moments. Not some truly fine moments, but interesting nonetheless - remember, we are not going against Bergman here, but we simply trying to piss on Hollywood. And that it does, admirably well.

If you can - just watch the first hour, and then go away, wandering what you are missing. Hint - you will not miss much, for the ending is nothing to write home about. It should have stopped at its seventieth minute, but in a rather dumb fashion it keeps going into its ninety fifth, and by then it is already exhausted, and it loses its attractiveness and charm, and it is all downhill.

With all its faults it is bound to generate more emotions than two dozen recent academy nominations. Its strongest point - Julia is not in it.

Did I say it was not a great weekend? Well, it was not all lost, for these two will keep you coming back to them for few more days. All for $5.50 - one Clark's matinee, less popcorn and parking.
