No, it didn't make me want to run and rent more of Marleen Gorris films... I usually don't like films that have strong female flavor. A work of art should be done by an artist, not a "female artist" or "whatever else" artist. When it comes to movies based on significant works of literature, I hold an edge over my wife. She usually remembers the source material too well, and that often interferes with her viewing pleasures. Any deviation from The Source causes strong negative reaction. I don't have that problem. Plus this one I have not read...
It is easy to recommend this movie, for it is beautiful, even if not great. But most significantly - it is a wonderful vehicle for two marvelous actors: John Turturro and Emily Watson. Many say that this is John's finest performance, and I see little reason to doubt that. And as far as Emily - it is simply AMAZING how much she has accomplished in just five short years. Every meeting with her is a pleasure.
So here you have it - a far less than perfect film that is a must see.
