I too enjoyed the two day event in Newport. Spent all day Saturday and most of Sunday attending very informative seminars and demonstrations. I was very impressed by representatives from various home theater and audiophile magazines. They didn't hold any punches when it came to discussing the current state of HDTV systems, Dss, Cable, DVD-audio and SACD.

True HDTV is simply awesome on either a large RPTV or FPTV. I am looking at RPTV's and am very happy with what is available right now except for price. According to Mike McGann at "Home Theater" magazine you can expect prices to come down drastically in the near future. These sets apparently aren't any more expensive to produce than high end NTSC sets. Manufacturers are simply trying to recoop some R&D costs. If you do buy now, buy HDTV ready (without the decoder) since the set top boxes will only get better and cheaper.

John Atkinson (Stereophile) discussed the differences between the new audio formats. Which format will come out on top only time will tell, but it looks like DVD-audio has the best foothold. SACD seems to be superior to DVD-audio however.

Cable and HDTV? Not likely in the near future.

DSS and HDTV? Knocking on the door

One note, you mentioned that Audio Video Today supplied Dunlavy SC-1/AV speakers audio for their demo with the Zenith hi-defs', but in fact they were demonstrating Dunlavy's new SM-1's. I'm sure of this since I fell in love with them and purchased all five speakers at the end of the show at a considerable discount.

That's another great thing about the show, not only do exhibitors collaborate to present complete top-of-the-line systems but their free to let you take it home with you too.
