IMO the center channel speaker has to be one of the most over-hyped aspects of HT. Definitely NOT "the most important speaker" as so many HT gurus have espoused. Speaker priority should be given to getting a good pair of front speakers.If you have speakers which can image decently and you don't sit wildly off-axis, there is no reason why a phantom center shouldn't suffice.
IMHTS I've used speakers as diverse as Maggies, Martin Logans, Energys, ProAcs , all without needing a center. Plus if your system doubles for music you're going to want to turn off the center anyway.
