As suggested by the other posts, the way LFE is actually handled when bass management is set to "no subwoofer" varies with the processor design. With some processors, doing what you suggest is indeed possible, with others it is not. I know that Yamaha processors (i.e., their DD/DTS receivers and integrated amps) have a feature called "LFE/Bass Out" which, when set to "Main", allows you to send LFE information to the main speakers and not to the sub (assuming, of course, that the main speakers have been set as "large").
